One Page Biography of Sydney Duncombe
After receiving a B.A. from Yale in 1948 and a Masters in Public Administration from Syracuse, Sydney Duncombe made state budgeting his career. He worked for the New York State Budget Division, headed the Ohio legislative budget staff, and became Superintendent of the Budget of the State of Ohio in 1957. The Republican Governor was defeated at the next election and Duncombe headed west to work for the Washington Legislative Budget Committee and receive a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Washington.
Sydney Duncombe taught from 1962-1987 at the University of Idaho, taking a leave of absence to become Cecil Andrus's first budget director. Finding the standard lecture boring to many students, he used role-playing, plays, and argued against himself in class using differing hats to present the pros and cons of various issues. Duncombe won several outstanding teaching awards and became the author of two books and more than two dozen journal articles.
In 1988, Sydney Duncombe retired to care for his disabled wife and recover from leukemia. In Oregon, he took writing courses and had four short stories and three poems published. His first novel, The Unlikely Candidate, was self-published in 1998 and broke even. His next two novels, Enduring Faith (a religious romance) and Blizzard in August (an adventure romance set in the White Clouds Mountains) were commercially published by AmErica House in 2001. All three novels have an Idaho setting.
After moving to Idaho Falls in August, 2001, Sydney Duncombe became a member of the Idaho Writers' League and received its prestigious 2001 Writer of the Year Award. He is currently working on a Civil War romance with his daughter, Mary Haley.
