Irene Bennett Dunn

Author of the book, "Out of the Night."
On the night of August 17, 1959 Irene Bennett Dunn was camped with her husband and
four children on the banks of the Madison River near Yellowstone Park when an earthquake
of 7.5 magnitude hit. The quake unsettled the mountainside above their camp with devastating
results. A massive landslide swept over the campground, damming the Madison River and
creating a new lake. Irene survived along with her 16-year old son, Phil, but the rest of her
family perished. The earthquake claimed 28 lives total.
Irene was born in 1919 in Nebraska and moved west to the small town of Hope, Idaho,
in 1936. She attended school in Hope, graduating in 1938 with a class of seven students.
She married Purley "Pud" Bennett in 1941 in Coeur d'Alene, and they had four children -
Carole, Phil, Tom and Susan.
This book is about the tragedy that took four of her family members; moreover, it is about
how she survived and managed to have the courage to rebuild her life along with her son,
Phil. She started writing Out of the Night with the urging of her family and friends
after she retired from teaching elementary school. She lives with her husband, Jack, on
their farm in Hope.
Irene has been published in Good Old Days magazine, and The Sandpoint Newsline. She
has had several stories in a Reiman book publication, "The Good Land." She has also
had some poetry published.
Irene is a member of the Sandpoint Chapter of the Idaho Writers League, Bonner County
Historical Society, and the Upsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society.
