Amy McClellan was born in rural Wisconsin and wrote her first poem at age nine. She did not realize at the time, but that first poem entitled “Just One More” was a progressive monorhyme. She used her poetic talents throughout high school, but lost that focus after marriage to concentrate on raising her six children.
In 1998, after a prescription drug reaction left her in a deep depression, barely able to communicate and physically impaired, Amy joined the Idaho Writers' League. The group supported her wish to get back into writing. She has since become a strong believer in the therapeutic benefits of writing poetry and belonging to the IWL.
Amy has been researching various forms of poetry for the past several years and is attempting to promote the art of poetry from a writer's view as well as a reader's perspective. She has presented numerous workshops ranging from kindergarten level through the middle school grades.
Amy self published a collection of critter capers called Sum of the Tails at Cowpiranch in 2003. The stories are mostly narrative humorous poems, along with several nursery rhyme type poems and a joke section. And yes, it does include “Just One More”. “I've enjoyed sharing the book with my family and friends and it has been a big hit with the kindergartners that tour our farm each spring. I also read several of the stories in celebration of National Poetry Month at our local library this past April.”
In 2004, Amy served as the editor for the IWL Leagazette. She followed that in 2005 by taking the reigns of the Idaho Falls chapter, serving as their President.
